George Street Works
26 August 2025
As reported back in March, works will soon begin to improve the public realm on George Street and Manchester Street, bringing fresh life to the area for residents, visitors, and local businesses, in a project being delivered by Westminster City Council with funding from The Portman Estate.
From Monday 22 September to Wednesday 17 December 2025, works will include a new junction buildout and high-quality repaving along the southern side of George Street (between 41 Portman Tower and No. 8) and on Manchester Street (between No. 52 and No. 56c). These upgrades aim to create safer crossings, smarter streets, and a more welcoming environment for everyone.
Works will take place Monday–Friday (8am–5pm), with occasional Saturday activity (8am–1pm). The final resurfacing is scheduled for overnight on 17 December (8pm–6am), weather permitting. During this time, the George Street/Manchester Street junction will be closed to vehicles, with diversion routes clearly signed. Pedestrian access to homes and businesses will always be maintained.
These changes mean safer, more attractive streets, boosting the local experience, drawing more foot traffic and enhancing the appeal of the neighbourhood. Alongside these works, The Portman Estate is taking the opportunity to enhance George’s Pocket Park, which will see the temporary decking removed and the area repaved to make way for new seating and greening. More detail to follow in the coming months.
Businesses and local residents affected by the works will be contacted directly with more information.
We will be liaising with the team managing the works for the duration of the project. If you have any questions that we can raise on your behalf, contact us at info@bakerstreetq.co.uk.
