Looking after the quarter

Improving Air Quality

We offer a range of practical services and signposting to help members do their bit to reduce emissions and improve air quality. Not only that, to have an even greater impact, we work closely with the Council, the GLA and the wider community on air quality initiatives and participate alongside fellow central London BIDs and Estates as part of the West End Zero Emissions Group (ZEG).

This forms part of our extensive focus on Sustainability. Using Bioregional’s One Planet Living® framework we developed a Sustainability Action Plan to encourage and facilitate sustainable business practices and responsible consumer behaviour, monitored on an ongoing basis by our dedicated Sustainability Steering Group.

Visit our Sustainability Hub for advice and guidance for businesses, broken down by industry sector.

In September 2023, a report was published into local air quality, following extensive monitoring across the area, and commissioned by the Marylebone Forum. The results showed that there has been a marked improvement in Marylebone’s air quality over recent years, with concentrations of NO2 and PM2.5 declining considerably, now meeting the UK targets for both. Read the full report here.

Smarter Recycling

Our Smarter Recycling service reduces traffic and emissions in the Quarter by cutting the number of waste collection vehicles on the streets. Working with two industry leading waste and recycling service providers, Recorra and First Mile, the area-wide scheme helps businesses cut costs and meet their green goals by minimising waste and increasing recycling rates. The scheme is also available to non-members in the area, minimising kerbside waste. Find out more about the service and its benefits here.

Greening the Quarter

We created George’s Pocket Park in partnership with The Portman Estate and Derwent London – a green micro-oasis providing a much-needed outdoor respite space for local workers and those passing by and the location of our weekly street-food pop-up. Watch this space for future similar projects to add more pollution-tackling planting to the local area.

Our Urban Greening Guide offers businesses and residents suggestions and advice for adding greenery to their premises to support local biodiversity. Find out more here.
