Simpler Recycling Legislation
14 October 2024
From 31 March 2025, all businesses with more than ten employees will be required to separate food waste, glass, plastic, metal, paper and card from general waste, under new legislation announced last year by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra). This is called the ‘Simpler Recycling’ legislation and aims to remove confusion about what can and can’t be recycled and help increase recycling rates across the country.
You can find out more about Simpler Recycling here.
Our Smarter Giving waste and recycling contractors – First Mile and Recorra – are ready to help you meet these regulations and we encourage you to get in contact with them now to receive a free audit of your waste and review your current waste streams.

Smarter Recycling is an area-wide waste collection and recycling scheme across Baker Street Quarter and Harley Street BID, that helps businesses to cut costs and meet their green goals. As more businesses use the service, the more we improve the area’s air quality and congestion by having fewer vehicles in the Quarter collecting rubbish. We have seen a 46% reduction in collection trips since launching in 2014. Find out more (including how to access a free waste audit) here.
