Oxford Street Update
12 October 2026
Oxford Street will become traffic-free between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street from Monday 26 October, marking a significant change to how people travel to and through the area.
For businesses, workers and visitors in Marylebone and the surrounding area, there will be changes to bus routes, vehicle access and servicing arrangements.
What is changing?
From Monday 26 October, Oxford Street between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street will be pedestrianised.
Mobility scooters and emergency vehicles will continue to have access at all times. Vehicles carrying out freight, deliveries and servicing will be able to access the pedestrianised section between midnight and 7am.
The following north-south connections will remain open:
- Orchard Street / North Audley Street
- Duke Street
- Stratford Place / Davies Street
- Vere Street / New Bond Street
- Holles Street / Harewood Place
- Regent Street
- Great Portland Street
Some roads may also be subject to short-term closures to facilitate construction works.
Changes begin from Sunday 25 October
Bus and traffic diversions will begin from the evening of Sunday 25 October, ahead of the pedestrianisation taking effect the following morning.
Buses will no longer run along Oxford Street between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street. Some routes will be diverted onto surrounding streets, with new stops being introduced in areas including Wigmore Street.Alternative bus stops will generally be around 200 metres from the traffic-free section.
With changes taking place across the network, we recommend that businesses, workers and visitors allow extra time for journeys and check their route before travelling.
Getting to and around the area
Public transport remains the easiest way to reach the area, with services to Tube and Elizabeth line stations at Bond Street, Oxford Circus and Marble Arch unaffected.
Cycling will not be permitted on the traffic-free section of Oxford Street. Taxis and private hire vehicles will also not be permitted within the pedestrianised area, and pick-up and drop-off arrangements may change.
Businesses and visitors should check their journey using TfL’s Journey Planner or the TfL Go app before travelling.
What happens after pedestrianisation?
Once traffic has been removed, the Oxford Street Development Corporation and its partners will continue work on the longer-term plans, including new seating and rest areas, trees and planting and improved signage.
