Simpler Recycling

From 31 March 2025, the government’s new Simpler Recycling legislation comes into force, changing the way that businesses, large and small, collect and recycle their waste.

As part of the legislation, businesses are required to collect four waste streams separately:

  • Food waste
  • Dry mixed recycling (metals, plastics, glass)
  • Separate paper and card (if you produce lots)
  • General waste

The initiative aims to introduce a new, common-sense approach to recycling across the country to reduce landfill waste and tackle illegal waste activities, creating a more sustainable and environmentally conscious society through improved recycling efforts.

  • Simpler Recycling Timeline

From 31 March 2025 – Large and small businesses, as well as non-household municipal premises must have core recycling collected (this includes a separate stream for food waste)

From 31 March 2026 – Local authorities must implement a standard core recycling collection, including weekly food waste, for households.

From 31 March 2027 – Plastic film will also be included as part of the plastic waste stream. Micro-businesses with fewer than 10 employees will have to be compliant.
