Oxford Street Pedestrianisation

The Mayor of London has confirmed that the first phase of Oxford Street’s pedestrianisation will proceed following the latest public consultation. The scheme will remove traffic from the section between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street, with the intention for this stretch to be traffic‑free by the end of the summer.

Transport for London has been instructed to begin work at pace, enabling the changes to be delivered as quickly as possible. Once implemented, the street will be closed to cars, buses, taxis, private hire vehicles, cycles, scooters and pedicabs, while emergency access will remain available at all times. Servicing for businesses will continue between midnight and 07:00.

The Mayor has set out design principles including the introduction of additional greenery, seating, improved lighting and clearer wayfinding. Public safety – particularly for women and girls – has been included as a focus, developed in partnership with community groups and the Metropolitan Police.

Once traffic is removed, the Greater London Authority, Transport for London and the newly established Oxford Street Development Corporation will begin further phases of work to enhance the public realm.
