About Us

Our Sustainability Commitments

Our commitment to Sustainability is central to our full suite of programmes and is delivered across our projects and workstreams. Below, you can find out more about how we are working towards these commitments, as well as details of specific initiatives, including area-wide recycling schemes, social impact, training and resources for businesses.

Sustainability Action Plan

Using Bioregional’s One Planet Living® framework we developed a Sustainability Action Plan which is monitored on an ongoing basis by our Sustainability Steering Group. The Action Plan sets out our commitments under five key pillars:

  • To support and facilitate businesses in meeting their environmental impact ambitions

    We do this through:

Smarter Recycling: area-wide waste collection service that reduces traffic and emissions.

✦ Sustainable City Charter: As a Strategic Partner of Westminster’s Sustainable City Charter, Baker Street Quarter Partnership is committed to supporting our members in becoming charter signatories.

✦ Sustainability Training: Our online learning platform offers sessions on ESG and net-zero, free to employees of our member businesses.

✦ Resources for Businesses: Our Sustainability Hub features a wealth of information for businesses on how to reach ESG, carbon and sustainability commitments, including current and forthcoming legislation, toolkits, and accreditations.

✦ Climate Fund: With a grant secured through the Westminster City Council Climate Fund we are supporting SMEs and charities in making their premises more sustainable.

  • To collaborate with members and partners to enable the delivery of healthy, high quality and sustainable public spaces

Our aim is to ensure that the area is clean, safe and welcoming to all. We do this through:

Improving Air Quality: we offer a range of practical services and signposting to help members do their bit to reduce emissions and improve air quality.

Placemaking: find out more about our strategy to improve the area’s greening and biodiversity and promote inclusivity and accessibility.

✦ Planters & Urban Greening: with funding from Greening Westminster we enhanced the greening along the walking route between Marylebone and Baker Street stations. We also installed planters at Marylebone Station in partnership with Chiltern Railways and its Community Investment Fund. Our Urban Greening Guide provides businesses with advice on creating new planting and urban greening projects in privately- owned spaces across the Quarter.

  • To nurture a connected and caring community

    We do this through:

Smarter Giving: our social impact programme facilitates partnerships between businesses and local charities, groups and schools, with activities including volunteering, fundraising, skill-sharing, and supporting education and employment.

Summer in Square: our annual festival in Portman Square for the whole community, including activities for families.

Wellbeing: our online learning hub includes workshops to support wellbeing and mental health, available free to employees of our members, and staff at local charities and community groups.

Baker Street Hub: our meeting and event space is available for use by charitable organisations and the local community.

Communications: our regular mailouts aim to foster a sense of community and inclusion. This includes our Community newsletter, featuring information about our projects, forthcoming events and news from our partners, sent quarterly to members of the wider community.

✦ Outreach: we ensure a caring and balanced approach to street management, including funding our outreach service, via The Passage, to support those that are homeless and sleeping on the streets.

  • To enable a sustainable, socially beneficial experience for all

    We do this through:

Refill: as a Refill destination, we promote the 30+ locations in the area offering free water bottle refills.

AccessAble: our AccessAble destination page for Baker Street and Marylebone Area features a wealth of information for those with accessibility needs.

Make It Marylebone: our area promotions celebrate the vibrant local community, showcasing people, businesses, and initiatives that foster connection and inclusivity, while also highlighting eco-conscious and sustainable businesses, charities, and accessible green spaces.

  • To build an environmentally and socially responsible company culture across all operations

We are committed to ambitious sustainability targets for our own operations including around waste management and staff wellbeing. Sustainability and inclusion plans are integral to all of our events and activations.

We have achieved a number of accreditations, recognising our environmental and sustainable commitments:

    – Green Mark Level 2

    – Great Places to Work

    – Good Work Standard

    – Living Wage Employer

    – Mindful Employer

    – Strategic Partner of Westminster Council’s Sustainable City Charter working with other stakeholders  to further develop the Charter and drive progress towards a net zero Westminster by 2040.
