Weekend Tube Usage Increases

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, visited Baker Street station on 10 January to unveil a special roundel to mark 160 years since the first Tube journey took place between Paddington and Farringdon stations. A programme of activities throughout 2023 will celebrate the Tube and its enduringly important role in London life.

We have been receiving entry and exit data from TfL for Baker Street, Bond Street and Marble Arch since the post-covid recovery began in 2020. At the height of the pandemic and as recovery began, this data was shared frequently with retail and hospitality businesses, alongside our area recovery insights, to help those businesses with their planning and resourcing.

The most recent data received from TfL shows that there has been a significant increase in entry and exit taps on Saturdays and Sundays at these three local stations, edging towards numbers seen before 2020. We are delighted to see these weekend increases and the boost this gives to the area’s retail, food, hospitality and attractions.

While some of our members are reporting the return of their employees to pre-Covid numbers, we know that for others, hybrid working means that weekday office occupancy remains lower, particularly on Mondays and Fridays, and this has had a knock-on effect on footfall and local consumer-facing businesses. We have recently adjusted our focus towards attracting more visitors to the area, with targeted communications and social media, participation in London-wide campaigns and extending our events to take place at weekends over the summer. Supporting our retail and hospitality businesses is crucial in maintaining the area’s vibrancy for all to enjoy. Check out our Baker Street Regulars page for info on deals at local businesses and follow us on Instagram for up to date promotions and events in the area.
