Manchester Square’s New Public Space Given Green Light

We are delighted to have received the green light for this much needed new public space on Manchester Square, providing a peaceful respite for workers and residents in the area as well as greatly improving the environment for those walking and cycling through the Square. The designs include seating, attractive greenery and a ‘Wallace’ water fountain and will enhance the setting of the much-loved cultural institution, The Wallace Collection as well as supporting their community and outreach work.

We are working in partnership with The Portman Estate and Westminster City Council on this project which will include increased pedestrian safety and accessibility with wider footways, a reduced traffic and step-free crossing and also a dedicated eastbound cycle lane on the Northern side of the square. All the additions will create a welcoming gateway to the area from the south – particularly important one CrossRail has opened at Bond Street.

Planning is now underway for work  to commence in the spring of 2022 and is expected to take up to nine months to complete. Precise timings will be announced closer to construction commencement, with further engagement with local residents, businesses and any impacted stakeholders to take place in the coming weeks and months.

We will keep you up to date on progress over the forthcoming months through our newsletter and targeted street works communications. If you have participated in the consultation for the scheme, your email address will be automatically added to the Council’s subscriber list for email updates. While very much a project for Marylebone the scheme is being developed in conjunction with the Council’s Oxford Street District framework. For more information visit here
