Go Plastic-Free This July In The Quarter

July is Plastic Free Month, so we’ve rounded up a few ways of making sustainable and eco-friendly choices this month. Businesses in the Quarter are involved in many sustainable practices already, which in turn helps make easy ethical choices available to employees, locals and visitors.

Bringing your own reusable cup to your usual café is an easy way to reduce usage and waste of single-use cups and lids, and most places offer a discount on your hot drink as an ongoing benefit for you; many coffee shops sell their own reusable cups too. Check out the discounts from Pret a Manger, Soho Coffee, Za’ta, Paul and more.

Similarly, you can bring your own container when picking up lunch at places such as Tossed, Etna Coffee and Simple Health Kitchen on Baker Street, and Food Filosophy on George Street. At Pure on Baker Street you can bring in your water bottle for refilling with filtered water, rather than buying another plastic bottle.

Many of the cafés and shops in the Quarter offer beautifully-made reusable bottles, cups, flasks, lunch containers and shopping bags. Why not check out the home and accessories selection at Labour and Wait, The Japanese Home, Niwaki, Accessorize, Cards Galore, Ryman, also the cafés mentioned above, find out their details in our directory.

Our Smarter Recycling partner Paper Round has introduced the SustainABLE Box, which is a great way of collecting hard-to-recycle plastic items like crisp packets, coffee pods or toiletries. You can sign up with PaperRound (they don’t have to be your wider waste contractor) for these dedicated, labelled boxes that will be collected when they’re full, and then transformed into new products.

On 14 July from 9.30 – 17.00 we’re running an online training session on Environmental Awareness. This is free to BakerStreetQ Members, and is aimed at those with responsibility for their companies’ environmental management. Find out more on the course content and book your place here.

There are lots of helpful ideas and tips on the Plastic Free July website regarding small changes you can make, whether at work, home, in schools or at events, all of which contribute to reducing plastic in our daily lives.

We’d love to hear from you on your own sustainability successes within your company, please email us on [email protected]
