Elizabeth Line Opens At Bond Street

The Elizabeth Line service at Bond Street station opens today, creating a new arrival point for commuters and visitors to the south of the Baker Street Quarter area.  We are delighted by the arrival of this service which, following its full opening next May will mean journeys from Heathrow in under 40 minutes and Liverpool Street in eight minutes, with 24 trains every hour. This will give a boost to the local economy, both in welcoming visitors to the area to support retail and hospitality as well as a new commuter gateway, supporting staff recruitment and retention for local employers. This initial opening will be followed on 6 November by the first stage of the integration of the Elizabeth Line’s eastern and western branches, opening up routes to Reading and Heathrow to the west and Shenfield and Abbey Wood to the east.

Our CEO Penny Alexander was treated to a sneak preview of the new station, with a guided tour by London’s outgoing Transport Commissioner Andy Byford. The station features spacious ticket halls and longer platforms, decorated with artworks by British artist Darren Almond. ‘Horizon Line’, ‘Shadow Line’ and ‘Time Line’ are cast in bronze and aluminium in the same style as the nameplates that were historically used on British locomotives and were co-funded by Selfridges and the City of London Corporation.

Crucially, the new station is step-free from street to train with two new lifts, enhancing the area’s accessibility. To make the most of the opportunity that this new service brings, we are in the process of developing our Placemaking Strategy that will set out projects and initiatives to make the area more welcoming, including signposting and greening, that will help entice visitors and local workers to spend time in the Quarter. The strategy also incorporates improvements to the northern gateway to the Quarter, as part of the proposed extension of our boundary of operation encompassing Marylebone station.

More information on the opening of the Elizabeth Line at Bond Street can be found in the TfL press release

Watch this space for more information on our Placemaking Strategy – we will be in touch about very soon to gather your thoughts and feedback about the area.
