Classes Help Older Generation
3 August 2020
With support from BakerStreetQ and our business members, Penfold Community Hub has helped local older people in isolation stay fit and healthy with pilates, yoga and the power of song with online classes.
Penfold Community Hub has delivered a packed calendar of remote events and activities to those aged 50 and over. Participants have enjoyed chair-based exercise, virtual choir rehearsals and classes designed to improve posture and mobility.
Several participants have reported an impressive set of benefits from the initiative. One multiple sclerosis sufferer has an improved ability to stand, while others that have been shielding have said the sessions have safeguarded their physical and mental wellbeing.
The most recent Penfold activities have included:
- Physio and pilates sessions
Mixed ability classes aimed at improving mobility, flexibility and general wellbeing donated by our partner W1 Physio and Pilates.
- Church Street Singers’ Virtual Choir
A tutor-led group that allows people of all generations to mix and sing together.
- Royal Albert Hall Open Stages programme
An intergenerational learning opportunity which has included a five week activity pack delivered to the participants’ homes.
Comments from those taking part in activities included:
“Chair yoga has helped with my joints and stretched my spine, and made my body more supple, taking away stiffness.”
“I currently participate in the chair pilates class and it has helped me with my arthritis and mobility.”
“Being part of the ‘shielded’ group of Westminster residents I have been confined to my flat for the last 11 weeks… The introduction of these online activities has been a lifesaver, not only for physical well being but also mental. I have benefitted greatly… they are truly the highlight of my week.”
The Penfold Community Hub offers opportunities, advice and counselling to those aged 50-plus and their carers. The Hub has run diverse activities including sewing sessions, gardening opportunities and painting, drawing and craft get-togethers. This local charity that offers so much will need to adapt their programmes to enable social distancing. To do this they will need to host more classes to accommodate as many people as possible which requires additional funds.
